The Rise and Fall of Gilbert and Sullivan
The appeal of Gilbert and Sullivan is the wit and gorgeous melodies combined with startling humour. These combine to make ridiculous the follies of the Victorian age and our own. This is due to the partnership of William S Gilbert, who was an accomplished author and dramatist, combined with Sir Arthur Sullivan, the gift of melody and rhythm. Like many successful partnerships, it consisted of a union of opposites. The appeal of Gilbert and Sullivan is a blend of charm, silliness and satire which seems to endure even during changes of fashion. They were the Victorian equivalent of Spitting Image, poking fun at the establishment.
